Southern Province Biogas Technology Awareness Workshop

Janathakshan and People in Need, Cz hold Southern Province Biogas Technology Awareness Workshop on the EU SWITCH-Asia Initiative

Galle, 29th August 2014- Janathakshan together with project partner People in Need (PIN), Czech Republic and the Southern Provincial Development Authority conducted the Southern Province Biogas Technology awareness workshop under the EU SWITCH-ASIA Initiative “Up-scaling Biogas Technology for Sustainable Development and Mitigating Climate Change in Sri Lanka.” Held on the 29th August 2014 at the Chamber of Commerce Conference Hall, Galle the workshop was graced by Chief Minister Southern Province Hon. Shan Vijayalal De Silva, Provincial representatives from the Ministry of Health, Education, Environment, Industry, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Local Government representatives, Hoteliers, Bank managers both private and national, International and Local NGO’s and biogas users in the region.

Funded by the European Union the EU SWITCH Asia initiative is a joint partnership between local partner Janathakshan and People in Need, Cz, focused on up-scaling biogas technologies for sustainable development, responsible tourism, economic growth contributing to poverty reduction and climate change mitigation in Sri Lanka. The Southern Province awareness workshop is the third of four provincial awareness creation workshops under the EU SWITCH-ASIA Initiative. Prior to this workshop, well attended awareness workshops were held in the North Western and Eastern Province.  The Southern Province awareness workshop will see the participation of all provincial stakeholders and promote the use of biogas as a renewable, clean energy source for public authorities, households and tourism Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). Participants will also be given the opportunity to witness success stories from other districts and have interactive multi-stakeholder discussions.

Chief Minister Southern Province Hon. Shan Vijayalal De Silva said “We at the Southern Provincial Council are trying to create awareness and change attitudes so people recognize waste for the resource that it is. Biogas technology has the potential to convert waste into energy for lighting and cooking whilst contributing to eco-friendly, sustainable development and we welcome the EU SWITCH-Asia initiative.”
