Up-Scaling Biogas technology for sustainable development and climate change mitigation in Sri Lanka

The inaugural Workshop on the EU SWITCH-ASIA Initiative “Up-scaling Biogas Technology for Sustainable Development and Mitigating Climate Change in Sri Lanka” was launched on the 2nd April 2014 at Committee Room ‘’E’’, BMICH, Colombo 7. Janathakshan joins forces with People in Need (PIN) to implement the three year project focused on up-scaling biogas technologies for sustainable development, responsible tourism, economic growth contributing to poverty reduction and climate change mitigation in Sri Lanka. Funded by the European Union on a budget of EUR 665,000, this new EU Switch-Asia Programme promotes the use of biogas as a renewable, clean energy source for tourism Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), households and public authorities in the country while building the technical capacity of manufacture and construction SMEs in biogas technologies. Committed to creating an enabling environment for the large scale dissemination of biogas technologies the project also supports micro-finance institutions develop financial schemes to provide loans for biogas installations to SMEs and households.

The workshop presented the project portfolio, preliminary project findings related to use of biogas in Sri Lanka, project goals and was followed by an open forum discussion stimulating discussions between both interested parties and experts. The outcomes of these discussions will be taken into account by the implementing agencies during the further course of the project. The inaugural workshop was graced by the Ministry of Environment, Ministry of Livestock and Rural Community Development, Ministry of Technology, Research and Atomic Energy, Ministry of Economic Development and other related ministries, National Institutions such as the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA), Lanka Biogas Association (LBA) and Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI), EU representatives and key stakeholders from the private sector institutions related to manufacture, construction, financing and tourism and other organizations.
