Inclusive Urban Planning (IUP) Project

HBWs are women and men who produce goods and services as Income Generating Activity/activities within their dwelling place. They usually depend on the support of family members or other acquaintances to run their activities.

Home Net South Asia (HNSA) in collaboration with Janathakshan launched the Inclusive Urban Planning project, “Strengthening the organizations of Urban Poor Home based Workers for Greater Visibility and participation in City Governance” in the cities of Moratuwa, Kandy and Kurunegala, Sri Lanka.

The objective of the project was to identify home based workers in the cities and the issues related to their livelihoods including the identification of the organizations/groups that work with them. The project also established linkages with local government vital in order to uplift living conditions and improve marketing opportunities for the Home Based Worker.

Key project activities included:

  • Questionnaire survey
  • Focus group discussions, key informant discussions with representatives of local authorities and organizations working in communities
  • Rapid surveying at project locations
  • Awareness Creation meetings of HBWs.
  • Capacity Building Sessions of HBWs.
  • Awareness Workshops for city officials
  • Capacity development and leadership training programs for select leaders at project locations
  • Capacity development programmes in record keeping and accounting for select community leaders

The capacity development programmes assisted community leaders to not only govern their groups better but to maximize on productivity. The leaders shared their recently acquired knowledge with their group members. Since the establishment of links to micro finance programmes most have begun financial activities within their close circle. Subsequently, the project saw the introduction of improved technology measures for production, cost reduction and other developments to HBWs.
