“Biogas – A Bankable Investment Opportunity”

Colombo, 14th August 2014- People In Need, (Czech Republic) and Janathakshan (Gte) Ltd conducted “Biogas – A Bankable Investment Opportunity,” the awareness workshop for Financial Institutions on the EU SWITCH-Asia Initiative “Up-scaling Biogas Technology for Sustainable Development and Mitigating Climate Change in Sri Lanka.” Held at the BMICH, the workshop saw the participation of over 30 interested financial institutions (banks and MFIs) and was graced by representatives from the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA), Lanka Biogas Association (LBA), Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI), Coordinating Secretariat for Science Technology and Innovation (COSTI), South Asia Partnership Sri Lanka (SAPSRI) and National Universities.

The one day workshop introduced banks and MFI’s to biogas technology and encouraged the inclusion of biogas systems as a bankable investment opportunity in their loan portfolio. Representatives from the Cambodian micro finance institution PRASAC,  providing loans to households investing in biogas digesters since 2007,  imparted knowledge on biogas related products, loan schemes development, risks and returns associated with lending for biogas systems. The afternoon session of the workshop included interactive discussions between biogas technology experts, financial institution personnel other stakeholders related to micro credit.

The awareness workshop for financial institutions “Biogas – A Bankable Investment Opportunity,” aimed at making biogas technology financially accessible to a greater proportion of Manufacturing and Construction SME’s, hotels and households in Sri Lanka. Participants were also given a guided tour of operational biogas units at the BMICH manufactured by Arpico and Janathakshan. The SiriLak Umaga model donated by Janathakshan has been working successfully for close to a year.
