Janathakshan and NDB Bank Join Hands to Mitigate the Human Elephant Conflict in Sri Lanka

22nd September 2014, Colombo – Addressing the second most frequently reported natural disaster in the country, Janathakshan and NDB Bank, Sri Lanka joined hands in favour of implementing Palmyra bio-fencing technology to mitigate the Human-Elephant Conflict (HEC) in Sri Lanka.Reportedly killing 160 elephants and 50 humans annually, the HEC has permeated every district in Sri Lanka.

The signing of a formal agreement between green technology leader, Janathakshan and NDB bank was held at the NDB Bank head office premises in Colombo. Initially, the partnership will work on establishing a 1km Palmyra biofence in Nikaweratiya which will have multiple benefits in the future; saving the lives of these majestic creatures and providing them nutritious feed, Palmyra is an income source for poor villagers, a means for rural employment, a medicinal source and a carbon fixing medium.

Dhanan Senathiraja, Vice President and Head - Finance and Planning along with Manicus Paiva - Vice President Administration and Services signed the agreement on behalf of NDB bank. Ranga Pallawala, CEO and Chopadithya Edirisinghe, Director signed on behalf of Janathakshan. The occasion was also graced by Mr. Vajira Hettige, Senior Manager -Disaster Management and Climate Change Adaptation and Mr. Nishath Thiwanka, Project Manager - Practical Answers at Janathakshan and Ms. Ishani Senaweera Vice President - HR of NDB bank. Palmyra bio-fencing is an indigenous technology used for centuries to prevent elephant encroachment into human settlements in Sri Lanka. This technology was further researched and improved by Mr. Ranasinghe Perera, Director Janathakshan making it a climate friendly, environment friendly, cost effective and long-lasting technology to mitigate the impacts of the Human Elephant Conflict.
